About Me

Introduction

Greetings and Welcome to my Website. My name is Huzaifa Arab. I am a Game Design Student at DSKSupinfoGame, Pune, India. As of now I am 23 years old and in the 2nd Year of my 2 year Course.

That being said, let me tell you about how it all started.

My relation to video games dates back to my childhood (like the most of us :D ). The first system I ever used was an 8-Bit NES with my first Game being Super Mario Bros. I cannot recollect the exact thoughts on my mind at that time, however – what I do remember is that its fascination had gripped me. My brother was my teacher & arch-rival at video games. I grew up in competition with him and evolving my own taste in video games. My first try at Game Development (Well, level design to be precise…) was probably “Excite Bike” – A bike game with the feature to design your own track. The same could be said for numerous other games on the Sega 16-bit Mega Drive. Eventually, when I was about 9, I got introduced to the Computer System and the classic bundle of demo games (Wolf, Sky, Quake, Dave etc. :P ) and eventually Games like Tzar and Age of Empires – AOE being the game that helped me understand and love Editors to make my own maps. My understanding of the inner workings of Games began evolving with that which was further augmented by Editors to games like Quake 3 Arena, Heroes of Might & Magic, Warcraft 3 and so on. To further explore my passion towards the Gaming Industry, I chose to pursue it as a Profession and here I am, trying to prepare myself for the same and give back to Industry for what I had been consuming all along.

*My portfolio and this website are still a work in progress. I shall be updating the site with more of my work and documents over time as I compile them in a web presentable format.*

Design Philosophy

The kind of Game design Philosophies I admire are that of Designers like, Jonathan Blow (The Creator of “Braid”) and Will Wright (The man Behind “The Sims”). I believe it is time we evolved from the traditional close-ended games where you keep increasing the complexity of the Game to make it interesting. Intuitiveness is a prime factor in the success of Games that sell among the masses and get admired by critics alike. It is the Touch interface of the iOS that made games reachable to old people and young girls… it just added a natural way to play it, thereby increasing the target audience. Even though, professionally as a Game Designer – I know my concepts should be Scalable and Portable across different platforms, and I can come up with such concepts when I work; Just that I am an advocate of the fact that we need better ways of playing games than joysticks and keyboards. It is with such interfaces that we can bridge the gap between gamers who are ready to play it hard just to win, and the casual gamers who play it just for some quick entertainment. I want both the sides to experience games like they never have. As an effort towards the cause, I have developed my final year University game concept which is based on Motion sensing and is being primarily aimed at Kinect. Design wise, there is no such rule that dictates, how games “should be like”. It makes no sense to have such constraining rules in a creative field like ours.
Additionally, I think – as Game designers, we carry a responsibility of making good use of the Media. We just don’t entertain the player with them, Games are also a powerful medium that are cultural products which can be used to deliver a message and inscribe it in the minds of the players. It is the interactivity embedded in the Games that makes them different from movies and books.

I believe in a future where the barriers in communication between the Player and the Game System have reduced to nothing. It is then, that we shall be able to simulate true life and let the player experience what he really wants to enjoy. Just my two cents on how I look at it. :)

Up close and Personal ;)

I am a Hardcore technology enthusiast. To give you an idea of the scale we are looking at here, I might forget my birthday for once… but not the amount of Stream Processors in my graphics card or the Bus Bandwidth of the chip on my phone. I have always been a power user of the Devices and have never been the type to used the devices as they were shipped. Just love customizing things to my liking and tweaking their performance.
By nature, I am pretty Understanding (I think :P ) and I like to meet people with varied interests. I am a pretty self aware person and I am ready to absorb things for the better.

My interests include:
Watching Movies, Games (Duh!), Music (Metal, Rock, Jazz, Jrock, Kpop, Jpop, Classical etc), TV shows & Sitcoms, Sketching, Chess, Programming, Psychology etc.

Things I would like to do and be good at someday:

Singing, Music, Reading, Dancing & Making BETTER WEBSITES! :(

If you feel you would like to know me personally, don’t be shy to do a quick facebook search for my name. I won’t call you a stalker. :)
